Summer, winter, ballin’: why basketball is the best year-round sport
- Written by NewsServices.com
Basketball is one of Australia’s favourite games. Therefore, it only makes sense that we consistently rank up against the likes of the US, France and Spain, making us one of the world’s best teams. What’s more, it’s also one of our favourite club sports, with players of all ages joining social teams across the country.
This makes it a great sport to play throughout the year. Summer at the park, winter at the club, it seems us Aussies can’t get enough of grabbing our mates for a few hoops or a local league competition. This makes the game more versatile than other Australian sports, with cricket more suitable in the summer months and footy perfect for winter!
With this in mind, here is why Aussie basketball is fantastic throughout the year:
-
It can be played indoors & outdoors
Unlike footy and rugby, basketball can be played indoors and outdoors. Sure, you can play cricket outdoors in summer and indoor cricket in the winter time, but it’s a completely different game, and doesn’t contain the same traditional fun that the summer variant provides. So, this makes ball a sport that can be enjoyed year-round.
You or your local sports club can pick up the best basketball rings Afterpay has and stick them up in the driveway or in the sports centre, meaning you can play in the summer months or winter where it gets a little too cold and dark to play at the local ring.

It’s great for maintaining year-round fitness
Ball is a sport that incorporates many different fitness elements. From agility to jump power, speed to strength, there are innumerable skill and fitness attributes a player must work on to be at the top of the game. And, of course, working on skills and fitness throughout the year helps maintain your general fitness, too!
Whilst many cricket, rugby and footy players like to kick back and have a few in the off-season, playing ball year-round will help you maintain a heightened level of fitness that is obviously very good for your overall health and wellbeing. So, if you have been considering a sport that won’t give way to a silly off season, ball just might be perfect for you!

It’s fun in the sun & nice in the centre
Any sport is fun to play on a sunny day. From lawn bowls to kicking the footy, going for a bike ride to hitting up the cricket nets, sport and summer go together like spaghetti and meatballs. Naturally, basketball is a super fun sport to play in the sun, but it’s also heaps of fun to play inside in the winter, too!
This is because it is a healthy activity to partake in whilst many people would much prefer to cosy up on the couch and hibernate in the winter months. And whilst we all love being uber comfy on a chilly winter night, we often come out of this season feeling a little… sluggish.
Instead, this game will help you maintain a peak level of fitness even when everyone is curling up to their favourite series with a block of Caramilk. This is, once again, another reason why it is one of Australia’s most versatile physical sports, and why it rightfully takes its place as one of our favourite pastimes!
So, if you’ve been considering this game for your year-round exercise, you’re onto a real winner.
